GlintHawk - Explained (Horizon Forbidden West / Zero Dawn Lore)
The GlintHawk from Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Zero Dawn explained
The Glinthawk is an aerial scavenger designed to keep the land clean of broken machines; An aerial Acquisition Class machine, they physically resemble a Vulture, as their armour plating resembles the wings and feathers of a bird, as well as their general layout, which includes a beak, and two legs.
They are Functionally, the aerial counterpart of the Scrapper, scavenging destroyed machines, and processing their parts for recycling.
To do so, the Glinthawk will make use of its beak, which is equipped with an array of rotary cutting tools to cut, grind and process parts and resources from a destroyed machines chassis.
A pair of optical sensor arrays are located in the same position where a birds eyes would be, and an armoured Freeze sac containing Chillwater, is positioned on its front, presumably as part of a cooling system to prevent excessive heat build-up during scavenging, but it will also utilise this as a weapon to drop Chillwater on its perceived enemies, causing freeze damage, and restricting their ability to move.
If at close range, they will swoop down and perform a melee attack, slashing with their talons.
They will typically congregate in flocks of around 3 or 4, perched on or circling above high areas such as cliffs, mountains, and mesas.
Being aerial, they can easily spot a destroyed machine chassis, and descend down to scavenge it.
Glinthawks were designed by Zero Dawn’s artificial intelligence, GAIA - as part of the terraforming system’s restoration of the Earth’s biosphere after it was destroyed by the Faro Plague in the mid-21st century.
They were one of the first machines encountered by humans, and Initially, like all other Zero Dawn terraforming machines, were docile, and avoided humans; However, when Humans began hunting them for parts and resources, this resulted in a phenomenon referred to by the tribes as “The Derangement”, in which Glinthawks as well as all other Zero Dawn-made terraforming machines began exhibiting increasing hostility towards humans, resulting in them attacking Humans on sight.
