And the GNOME 41 RC was released with last minute bug fixes and improvements. Check out what's new in this preview and see what's next.
GNOME is a free software project that produces the GNOME environment for users and the GNOME development platform for developers.
Now, Javier JardΓ³n Cabezas of the GNOME Release Team announced today by email the general availability for public testing of the milestone Release Candidate for the upcoming GNOME 41 desktop environment.
GNOME 41 is the next major release of the acclaimed desktop environment for Linux distributions, and promises many new features, updated and new applications, as well as numerous improvements and bug fixes.
The Release Candidate (RC) milestone comes right after the beta release announced in late August and fixes a bug in the new calling app that prevented SIP from working when using multiple network interfaces and adds last minute touches around the account SIP management and its UI.
Under the hood, the GNOME 41 RC improves auto-rotate support, activates power saving profile when battery is low, dims screen faster by default, generalizes laptop battery notifications, refactors battery notifications to devices external and optimize rendering and zooming the screen improves startup animations when exiting the Activities Overview and adds the ability to authorize devices after locking the screen.
The Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser has been updated with the ability to ask users if they want to close an unresponsive page and a fix for a crash that occurred when using the Clear All Passwords action.
In addition, Epiphany no longer uses the Adwaita-themed system scrollbars, nor the elementary OS's Pantheon desktop captive portal helper.
The GNOME software package manager also got some improvements, like support for add-on categories, the ability to sort new and updated apps by release date on the category page, adjusted context tiles and dialogs, and better details page for non-desktop apps.
GDM (GNOME Display Manager) comes with improved fallback to the X.Org session in the login screen and the ability to reuse the virtual terminal at logout, GNOME Boxes now has the ability to use VNC for boxes when SPICE is not available, and GNOME Control Center's user accounts page now features improved parental control behavior.
Also updated in the GNOME 41 RC is the GNOME Maps application, which now features updated OSM POI types for editing, refined use of the shopping cart icon in search results for use only in supermarket-like locations, and updated screenshots to reflect the switch to osm.org tile system scrollbars when using the Adwaita theme.
Some last-minute touches to the new GNOME Music design are also present, along with asynchronous improvements and a fix for removing songs from the duplicate playlist.
Those of you wishing to take the Release Candidate (RC) milestone of the upcoming GNOME 41 desktop environment for a test drive can use the GNOME OS installer image , the official BuildStream project snapshot, or the source code packages .
However, keep in mind that this is still a pre-release version, so don't use it for any production work.
Finally, the final release of GNOME 41 is expected on September 22, 2021.
