The LibreOffice is the office suite developed by The Document Foundation (TDF). But it's much more than that: it's one of the most popular open-source, cross-platform office suites.
In summary, LibreOffice is a free office suite compatible with the main office suites on the market.
In early August, The Document Foundation released LibreOffice 7.0. It was a release with important improvements, including improved compatibility with Microsoft Office.
Now, The Document Foundation has announced the general availability of LibreOffice 7.2.1, as the first point release of the latest and greatest 7.2 series.
What's New in LibreOffice 7.2.1
Released less than a month ago, the LibreOffice 7.2 office suite has already been adopted by hundreds of thousands of computer users as it is another major release of the popular, cross-platform, free office suite that continues to improve interoperability with the MS document Office formats.
LibreOffice 7.2 is also the first release of the powerful office suite to add native support for Apple M1 machines and, as expected, includes dozens of other new features and improvements in all of its main components, such as Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw or graphic.
Now LibreOffice 7.2.1 is here as the first maintenance update for the LibreOffice 7.2 series, fixing up to 87 bugs in all major components. Details about these bugfixes are provided in the RC1 and RC2 development milestone changelogs.
Therefore, if you have already adopted the LibreOffice 7.2 office suite in your GNU/Linux distributions, it is highly recommended that you update your installations to LibreOffice 7.2.1 as soon as the new packages arrive in the stable software repositories.
The Document Foundation recommends the LibreOffice 7.2 family only for technology enthusiasts and power users, as the rest of you should install the well-tested LibreOffice 7.1.6 update. Obviously, for enterprise deployments, you should use the LibreOffice Enterprise family of applications.
LibreOffice 7.2 will be supported by The Document Foundation until June 12, 2022, and the next one-off release, LibreOffice 7.2.2, is planned for mid-October 2021.
On the other hand, LibreOffice 7.1 series will be supported until November 30, 2021 , so be sure to upgrade to LibreOffice 7.2 by then.
To clarify further, the edition called “Community” is aimed at home users or educational organizations, while companies need to use the LibreOffice Enterprise application family of ecosystem partners.
The LibreOffice 7.2 office suite series will be supported by The Document Foundation with six maintenance releases through June 12, 2022.
