Go! Go! Hypergrind Game Sample - GameCube
Original Air Date: November 16th, 2008 (Revised Today!)
We put up a few videos for this game back in 2008, but didn't re-upload them because they desperately needed a facelift in the audio/visual department (which is why many of our most popular GC games haven't been re-uploaded yet). We condensed the three videos we had into two (The opening and Introduction were merged) and improved the audio/visuals significantly.
Go! Go! Hypergrind is an underrated skateboarding GameCube game that, while not perfect and does have its flaws, is impressive for a number of reasons, primarily that it's completely compotent in every way, features the assistance of the zany minds at Spümcø (Creators of Ren & Stimpy, this was also one of Spümcø's last hoorahs before they went defunct in 2005), and only costed $15... NEW. It certainly doesn't look like a game that only costed fifteen bucks and you certainly could've gotten a lot worse for a lot more money. Few games within this price range (not including freeware) are THIS good. It's complete with a story, good voice acting, great graphics, creative level designs and gimmicks new to the genre, an excellent soundtrack (with tracks provided by a variety of groups, such as Tsunami Bomb who also had a track presented in Atlus USA's Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and Yuki Nakagawa who assisted in Wild Arms compositions, among others), tight play control which is essential to enjoying a game like this where the physics are hugely important (how else can I pull off good tricks?), various unlockables like hidden characters, modes, and Spümcø illustrations, and... did I mention this was $15 NEW? Its price has steadily risen over the years and a complete copy can run you triple digit bucks now, and it will probably get more expensive.
It's not common knowledge, but certain animation studios in the "Real World" have access to a place called the "Toon World". It's in this world where various characters are gathered to see who has the most over-the-top skills to be cast in a cartoon to be viewed by people all over the real world. Playing as a bunch of cartoon characters who are competing to become stars (while each having a little background story, a little which is a bit more serious than the game lets off), you have to complete a variety of challenges for each of the game's levels (it's not so different from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater). You can buy new upgrades and boards which have different statistics and must do things such as simply seeing who can earn the most points, repeat the most "Negative Reactions", Defeat their adversaries in Battle Matches, etc. On the subject of "Negative Reactions", they are your meal ticket to doing huge chains. Like in a cartoon, approaching hazardous things can have a number of cartoony effects on your characters and add a lot to the levels in conjunction with each characters various fantasy and standard tricks. The save/load/continue system is a little cumbersome and "Expert Mode" is generally lopsided due to a what I can only see as a programming error (as "Normal" point matches require scores of ten-thousands, "Hard" require scores of hundred-thousands, but "Expert" requires scores of ten-millions instead of millions-- notice how I didn't pick it) but I don't believe you get anything for completing Expert Difficulty anyway. Still, it's a good game that I'd recommend if you like skateboarding games. We have an introduction and sample. Enjoy.
