Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts Game Sample - GBA
Ahh... I've had this game lying around for SNES, GBA, Xbox, etc. for quite some time and what kind of October would this be if I didn't make a video for at least one of them? Being dubbed as one of the most sadistic and challenging video game series ever concieved, "Makaimura" is both lauded by those skilled or patient enough and hated immensely by those who have died more times than they can count.
Being a "enhanced" remake of the popular SNES game (which mainly goes by the same name, or Chohmakaimura R) and the third game in the series, it saw a number of improvements in gameplay and design (though the player can no longer attack above) and was significantly EASIER than the prior two titles. To add insult to injury, the GBA version is even EASIER THAN THE SNES GAME as it has even more slowdown and the ability to save after levels. If you still can't beat this one, then don't worry; you're not alone.
In the game, you are Arthur, fighting to rescue your beloved Prin Prin from the evil Sardius, and you will have to tackle seemingly endless waves of monsters, do a lot of awkward platforming, and use a variety of weapons which can be upgraded as you improve your armor from Bronze to Gold. Once you attain gold armor, you can gain an additional shield power-up, use powerful magical spells (which can give you slight invincibility, which makes some annoying parts much more tolerable if used correctly, such as the falling skulls segment in this vid),and can unravel other extras. The main way to become skilled in the game is to uncover hidden chests which can upgrade your armor faster and help you survive longer.
The GBA game contains the original game as well as a new "arrange mode", which allows you to get the legendary Princess Bracelet weapon during the first playthrough, and take branching pathes which determine the challenges you'll face ahead. The pathes you can take are measured by what kind of armor you have at the end of a level. The most interesting addition is the middle branch, which features all-new redesigned levels based on past material from Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. While the game could've been ported better in its entirety (the audio/video is still good, but the slowdown is even in the new levels), the added content puts this game a notch up from other lazy ports. This video shows the first level of arrange mode, being sure to show that you can use the Princess (or Goddess) Bracelet. Enjoy.
