Monolith is a free game developed by students at the famous Kobe Institute of Computing in Japan, and it was one of the best video game titles presented during their 10th Digital Works Anniversary (2009-2010). It's generally a basic 2D action game, but its the style in which it's presented that is unconventional. The game features 2D sprites and characters spread across large, three dimensional semi-reflective cubes. You have to find items to open passageways or hit switches to cause the cubes to rotate, revealing new parts within the same level. There are a couple of items that you can find or that enemies sometimes drop such as 1-Ups, Health, a Triple Shot, etc. I like how the view gets distorted towards the edges of cubes and if you shoot near the edge of a cube, the bullet appears as if it's turning a corner when it's really just going "straight".
