David Jaffe of Sony's Santa Monica Studio developed the God of War action-adventure game series. It debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game console and has since grown into a signature title for the PlayStation brand, with eight games released across various platforms and a ninth in the works. Based on Greek mythology, the plot follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior who was duped by his former leader, Ares, into murdering his kin. This sets in motion a chain of events that culminate in wars between mythological pantheons. Kratos follows a course of revenge due to the Olympian gods' machinations in the Greek mythology period of the series, while in the Norse mythology era, which adds his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, an older Kratos follows a path of repentance, unintentionally bringing the two into battle with the Norse gods.

With the exception of Betrayal, which is the only instalment to feature a 2D side-scrolling perspective, the games used a third-person, fixed cinematic camera in the first century. The camera was changed from being fixed to an over-the-shoulder open camera in 2018's God of War. To accomplish objectives and finish the plot, the player controls Kratos in a mixture of hack and slash action, platforming, and puzzle game elements in the series (platforming elements were omitted from God of War 2018 due to the camera change). The 2018 God of War includes Kratos' son Atreus, and although the game is mostly played as Kratos, there are moments where the player can opt to control Atreus passively (a button is dedicated to Atreus, and he will fire an arrow from his bow depending on where the camera is pointed).

Kratos' primary weapon in the Greek empire is a pair of double-chained blades known as the Blades of Chaos, the Blades of Athena (or Athena's Blades), and the Blades of Exile. Magic is often used, and most people learn four skills. The game also has "Objects," which are limited-use secondary weapons such as the Bow of Apollo. Most arms and magic are destroyed in each new game due to a plot device, and a new arsenal of weapons and abilities is gained during gameplay. Kratos' main weapon in God of War 2018 is the Leviathan Axe, a magical battle axe. It works similarly to Thor's hammer Mjölnir in that it can be tossed and returned to his side. He recovers the Blades of Chaos later in the game, which behave similarly to the Greek games but with different skills. Both the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos can be upgraded to use runic attacks, which are rare supernatural attacks. Each weapon has a light and heavy runic attack, and the player can equip different runic attacks to the arms.
