We're back again with another Golden Axe Returns playthrough. This week, we're playing as Kain Grinder!

I knew very little about the Golden Axe 3 protagonists prior to this game, and learning of Kain's magic sword was quite cool. Even cooler is the way it was implemented into the game. Unlike most other characters who can wield different weapons, Kain is stuck with his legendary sword permanently. Whilst this DOES limit his moveset in a way that might make his gameplay feel repetitive at times, it means he can also never lose his weapon, and his basic combo has cool sword twirling flashy animations which helps keep him feeling fun despite the lack of options :) His run attack is also very useful for juggling enemies, especially to knock them down a hole! Instead of wielding other weapons, they become absorbed into the sword, granting him power levels (nope, I'm pretty sure we can't have over 9000...), which he can then spend to shoot a flaming arc across the screen that I believe is more powerful depending on your power level. I DO have issues with the hitbox of this attack, as it seems to badly lack Z to the point where visually it looks like it's hitting an enemy, but it actually doesn't register a hit. The other use for power levels is that he can use them to create pickup-able magic to fill his magic meter, allowing you to effectively max out your magic in a dire situation, if you've saved up the power levels to do so. His magic isn't too powerful, sadly, and his high level magic can sometimes fail to hit anything if enemies aren't in the right position, which can be frustrating since you just wasted a whole precious bar on it (again, this game REALLY needs to have the magic guaranteed to hit everything, like in the original Golden Axe games. It's too precious of a resource to waste).
Kain is one of those characters who I didn't care for prior to this game but actually enjoy playing in this one :)

Hard to believe we're over half-way through the game/roster already. Hurry up and make more characters! I wanna keep this series going! xD Haha. I'm kidding, mostly. But for real, this is such a fun and addictive game and I look forward to each run :)
