Time for our weekly trip to the medieval era with Golden Axe Returns! This time we're playing with everyone's favourite Golden Axe 3 star, Chronos! Who couldn't love a badass, agile panther warrior?

This playthrough was CURSED from the beginning. After the horrible jump mechanics screwed me over, I have to admit, I was already 'defeated' in my mind before the playthrough even really got going. Then I accidentally hit the Magic button not once, but TWICE (I've been playing too much Streets of Rage 4... my mind assumes that button is my defensive special, lol). It took a while for me to get back into a positive mindset. Thankfully, Chronos's ability with pitchforks soon got me feeling good about the game again. Whilst his hand to hand attacks are cool, he is so undeniably skilled with weapons that I'd almost always prefer using those. There are a couple of weapons he can't use at all, and he doesn't really 'use' the Axe much at all, but the weapons he CAN use, he is probably the best character in the game with those weapons. With swords, he gains different combos and run attacks, and his special with all of them works well not just offensively but defensively too, since it can hit behind him. Spears and Pitchforks are a similar deal, though I sometimes find that the first kick is more accurate than the second. Spears he can poke a lot of things to death with ease, and Pitchforks have the best run attack in the game, easily.

One thing that I did keep feeling consistently was that it felt like my moves didn't have enough Z on their hitbox. I'm not sure if this is just a Chronos issue or if it's game-wide, but there were a LOT of times I felt like I was standing in front of an enemy but my attacks just weren't landing. I was even trying to look at the shadows to see what the hell I was doing wrong, lol. Perhaps I was just having an off day.

I also think that the enemies riding monsters are too strong, especially the pink monsters with the lunge attack. Players can be knocked off of monsters when riding them and I personally feel that enemies should be able to be knocked off too. It should not be "one rule for me, another rule for everybody else". That doesn't feel fair or intuitive, though perhaps it was that way in the originals.

I feel bad that I tend to use the same weapons a lot (character dependent) and some weapons I don't use at all, but the bow and wand are totally useless to me. I could see them being SLIGHTLY more viable in co-op, but right now there's just no reason to use either of them.

Just three characters left to go! One I hate. One I love. And one that's just fine. I wonder if you can guess which are which ;)

Who should be the next character to bravely hunt down the vicious Hellstrike and reclaim the Golden Axe for the forces of good? Our remaining characters are:
- Trix
- Cragger
- Sara
