We're back with another Golden Axe Returns playthrough! This week I figured I'd get the last of the OG roster out of the way: Gilius.

Gilius feels slightly underpowered comparead to Ax and Tyris, and I find him harder to do well with, though I can't put my finger on why, exactly. Perhaps his reach/range is partly to play, but I'm not sure. He's pretty competent otherwise though. One thing I do feel is that his unarmed special (the bomb) is very difficult to find a safe spot to use it, and it takes a long time to place. It would be more useful if he quickly pulled it out and dropped it, rather than squatting and taking the time to place it. I also noticed that his Sword special, where he plants it into the ground and performs a spin kick, doesn't seem to hit behind him, despite swinging his leg that way. I'm not sure if that was an intentional design choice or an oversight, because other characters with similar spin moves hit both directions.
Gilius is also the only OG character who's 'main' weapon doesn't feel as useful as they do on the others. Tyris's flaming phoenix and run attack with her sword are fantastic, and Ax's quick swings and cool double-hit special are good too, but Gilius's axe doesn't feel very special, and the 'special' move it has is very unsafe, as he jumps up and then slams to the ground, which leaves him wide open to getting knocked out of the air before it completes. It's not as safe as his two friend's specials, and makes me less inclined to use it overall.
Despite his 1 star in magic, Gilius is pretty handy because his MP fills quickly and his top level magic is almost guaranteed to hit everything on screen (which is how Golden Axe magic should work anyway). I assume it's simply 'weaker' than other characters, but it's still pretty useful.

Speaking of magic, one suggestion I would have is to allow the player to use a level of magic of their choice, like in Golden Axe 2 and 3. I feel like this would make players more inclined to use magic more often, since they won't feel like they're having to 'hold onto' a full bar because they don't want to waste it on regular enemies :) I also feel like low level magic should be more 'accurate' and useful overall. There are times where using it just doesn't feel worth it, so I will almost always just save up a full bar rather than spend it on lower levels.

I feel like I'm getting better at the game, as I've noticed that I don't lose continues as often as I used to. Even in my first videos of this game, I would lose at least one somewhere around the end of the game. I have also (off camera) beaten Normal difficulty without losing a continue as well.

It's hard to believe we're already halfway through the roster, but then again I'm used to Super Final Fight Gold where there more than twice as many, haha.

Who should be the next character to bravely hunt down the vicious Hellstrike and reclaim the Golden Axe for the forces of good? Our remaining characters are:
- Trix
- Cragger
- Chronos
- Kain
- Sara
