Welcome to the 5.0 release of GoldenEye Source, a fan-made recreation of GoldenEye multiplayer in Valve's Source engine.
Version 5.0 boasts improved visuals, new maps, new game modes, new weapons, new character models, and the ability to skin your weapons, along with a host of other gameplay improvements.
For fans of the original game, GoldenEye Source 5.0 is a loving recreation of the GoldenEye experience. Every element of the game's design screams GoldenEye, from the visuals to the music to the sound effects, and the additional layers of polish manage to bring the game into the modern era, while still retaining the nostalgic feel of the original.
GoldenEye Source was originally released in 2009 as a free download on Steam. The development team behind the mod wanted to "keep the original feel for [GoldenEye], while adding new gameplay features, maps, and weapons to keep the game feeling fresh."
The core gameplay is identical to GoldenEye, and other arena shooters. Weapon and armor pickups are scattered around the map, characters instantly respawn, and success depends on steady aim, map knowledge, and continuous movement.
To keep things interesting, GoldenEye Source 5.0 features additional game modes like Weapon Swap, in which players spawn with a random weapon and swap weapons with players they kill (or are killed by), and Gun Game, which Call of Duty fans are sure to recognize.
All in all, if you're a fan of GoldenEye or arena shooters in general, GoldenEye Source 5.0 is definitely worth a try. It's free after all, so you've got nothing to lose.
