“Lastly, people have wondered why this announcement came at this time. After Overwatch 2 had launched, we started refining our plans for future seasons. As those plans grew, we tried to find ways to make all of our ambitions fit together in a plan that we believed in.

We couldn't. And we also knew that we couldn't go back to pulling people away from the live game in service of that original vision again. So, we made the difficult decision to cut Hero Missions and started planning for the future.

From there, we needed to update the vision for the game, gain confidence in our new direction and roll out the changes to the team. The decision was the start of a long process, not the final piece of it.”

I have no illusions that making game content is hard. I know it takes time and arduous planning and workloads to happen.

The problem is: you announced you’d be providing a thing. Those of us excited for said thing kept playing because we figured “welp, PvE is coming. It’ll be worth it.” And now it’s not coming. You folks might have gained confidence for your new direction—but at the cost of trust from some of your fan base.

The OW intellectual property is grossly mishandled, underutilized, and becoming stale. I’ve read the books released. I’ve read the comics. I had some hope we’d get to explore these interesting characters more—which yes, I get we’re getting some jumbled together mess to satisfy our interest in the lore. However: you folks disappointed. Big time.

And to the people who are saying “BRO, IT’S FREE”. “BRO, WHO CARES ABOUT THE STORY.”

1. People purchased the battlepass to hold themselves over until the PvE came out.

2. If the story isn’t to be enjoyed—why give any one of the heroes backgrounds and origin stories? Like, at all?

3. You being okay with a developer pulling this stunt is a core reason why the gaming landscape is littered with half-baked live service games.
