A playthrough of Capcom's 1993 license-based action-puzzle game for the Super Nintendo, Goof Troop.

Played through as Goofy in single-player mode.

Was there ever a Disney TV show that managed to be more quintessentially 90s than Goof Troop? I was in the fifth grade when this attitude-laden take on Goofy showed up on the Disney Channel, and I watched it every day after school. I loved it, so it was pretty exciting news when Capcom announced a video game adaptation of Goof Troop.

Goof Troop begins with Goofy and his son Max going on a fishing trip when they see their neighbors, Pete and his son PJ, being kidnapped by pirates. Being the nice guys that they are, Goofy and Max follow them to the pirates' island in order to stage a rescue.

The game is an even mix of action and puzzle solving that reminds me a fair bit of Irem's Kickle Cubicle (https://youtu.be/yiJR_8NAmfY ). You play as Goofy (strong but slow) or as Max (weak but quick), and each of the five stages is made up of several single-screen rooms that primarily involve killing enemies by throwing stuff at them, kicking blocks, and finding keys as you work your way toward the boss.

The game is a lot of fun playing single player, but it is the fantastic two player co-op mode that elevates this cart above the average SNES game. It's not a long or difficult game by any means, but it is one that's fun to play again and again.

That, and it has a really charming presentation. The sprites are cute and cleanly drawn, and the soundtrack is fantastic. The instrument quality is way up there for a SNES game, and the original tunes are some of the best that you'll hear from a Capcom SNES game.

(But where's the theme song from the show?)

I remember this one rating well in Nintendo Power and the screenshots totally sold me on the game. After renting it God knows how many times from the local Hollywood Video, my parents finally relented and bought a copy for my sister and I. We played obsessively until we could plow our way through without using any continues.

It's not talked about nearly as much as the Disney games Capcom made for the NES, but in my mind, Goof Troop sits right on par with classics like Chip & Dale and DuckTales.

Oh, and it's one of the earliest Capcom games that Shinji Mikami worked on. You know, before he became famous with Resident Evil. Don't worry: nobody in Goof Troop becomes a sandwich.
