GoPro Hero 6 Black Recording Dialogue Audio With A Sennheiser MKH60 Professional Shotgun Microphone

In this video I’m using a very high end shotgun mic to see how well it performs with the GoPro Hero 6 Black. To get this mic to work with the Hero6 I’m also using a Saramonic SmartRig microphone preamp. The SmartRig is capable of supplying the 48 volt power that the Sennheiser MKH60 needs to power it, via 48V phantom power sent by the SmartRig down the XLR cable while also pre amplifying the microphone ahead of the GoPro. In between the GoPro and the Saramonic is the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adaptor, which is required for any external mic for the GoPro Hero 6 Black.
Because all the work for amplifying is done by the SmartRig, it means that the Hero6 isn’t having to work so hard with dynamic processing. This has the potential for a less compressed and limited signal, which is also clean with reduced hiss and noise that would usually happen when a GoPro has to work hard with dynamic processing of external microphones.
Although the audio is being recorded interleaved as part of the video file, which isn’t as technically good as recording raw audio in the GoPro, it can still sound very good when amplified optimally before the GoPro analogue to digital audio convertor. I’ve not used the potentially better raw audio mode as it’s very problematic, with sync issues of the resulting raw audio file within my NLE and DAW.
