In this video I’m testing what must be the best cheap microphone for any GoPro. This mic is a Lavalier, or lapel Clip-On mic and its cost is only £1 or $1 if bought from eBay. Granted, the mic will take some time to arrive as it’s likely to be shipped from China, although there are quicker options if you’re prepared to pay a little more and get it locally via Amazon.
The mic is an electret condenser type, which will power via the GoPro Hero 6 external GoPro Pro 3.5mm mic adaptor, this will also work from the same interface when attached to the Hero 5 Black or any GoPro that uses the external mic adaptor. Other GoPros will also work with this mic, such as the Hero3+, as they also send the necessary plugin or electret power required to power the mic’s electret capsule, via their USB to mic input cable.
The microphone is also omnidirectional as far as its polar pattern is concerned. What this means is that the mic will pick up equally well from every direction. This is really useful for getting a full vocal sound when moving your head about or moving with the GoPro.
Also, and a really amazing thing with this mic. You can also mount on top of your GoPro for hands free dialogue voice recording recording. As the mic is really sensitive, it lends itself to be camera mounted and does a really decent job at picking up voices and dialogue from all around. It’s also noticeably better than the internal mics on the Hero6 Black and 5 Black.
This mic really has to be the best cheap mic available.
