Gradius 2 (MSX) - Above the Horizon (Famicom Disk System 2A03+2C33 Cover) (Version 2)
22Remember when I redid my Famicom Disk System cover of YMO's Technopolis back in 2022? Well, I've decided to go back and redo another one of my earlier FDS covers, the intro theme of Gradius 2/Nemesis 2 for MSX, Above the Horizon. Like the Technopolis cover, my initial cover from 2021 was pretty terrible, as it was made when I didn't know what the hell I was doing and aimlessly guessing my way through everything without proper reference for the correct notes or drum patterns. I didn't even know how to use volume control properly, so the whole thing was a muddy cacophonic mess (though at least it was the right tempo). But of course, I've gained WAY more experience and knowledge since then, and I felt now was finally the time to do the song proper justice after all these years (plus, it's been months since I've done anything with the 2A03 or the 2C33 in Dn-FamiTracker, aside from a project that I still haven't completed yet). Anyway, (the superior) Gradius 2's soundtrack utilized the incredible Konami SCC for added wavetable sound channels, so there's plenty of layering going on with the music. I'm quite happy with how I was able to truncate all its notes into a smaller amount of channels on the Famicom Disk System. This whole project took me longer than I thought it would, but I managed to complete it in due time. Surprisingly, the part that I saved for last, the drums, was the easiest component, and I'm incredibly happy with how I was able to adapt the patterns. I will say that the bass isn't as strong as I wanted it to be, but I at least got to use one of the wavetables from the original version of the song, which I managed to squeeze into Dn-FamiTracker thanks to Furnace's wavetable editor. This project has been long overdue, and I'm glad to say that it was a rousing success. Maybe I might redo another one of my older covers sometime.
