Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar STEVEBURTO QUICK REVIEW: ONE 3D4 CLAW WAY UP!
Spiritual Successor to Wizardry 7 and uncompromising in its vision, Grimoire brings out the best and some of the most antiquated aspects of the first person dungeon crawler. A genre mostly relegated to 3ds and vita these days, there has nevertheless been a resurgence in the past decade. This one keeps it real close to its source material.
PLUS
+ SUPER HUGE! Sense of exploration, wonder, scale
+Great Music
+Pretty good graphics, particularly the monsters. Very much wiz7, but better.
+large variety of classes and races in 8 member party. Also can recruit npc characters.
NEGATIVES
- Battles are mostly involve around instant kills and quick saves to avoid revive penalty, even bosses can be instant killed. Enemies with little exp relative to their danger and ability to instant kill you.
- Puzzles can be cool, but some are super convoluted and some are not so much about solving the puzzle and more about figuring out what the game is demanding of you to tell it that you've solved the puzzle.
-inventory menu is some kind of nightmare.
-Critical items end up taking most of inventory, should have had their own inventory.
-Had a bug where my alchemist lost their alchemy skill and couldnt cast spells in battle with any success. Had to change class for it to go away.
-Plenty of useless skills, jank, and other things that should have had a balance pass.
