Guardian Trident SLF vs. Cyclops... and a Pesky Scout | Raw Footage | Elite Dangerous: Odyssey
I had a bad idea last night: I remembered that I unlocked the Trident SLF when it first came out and my Cutter had them equipped. I then said to myself, "Meh, why not - let's kill a Cyclops with one!"
So I did, and I took out a pesky Regenerator Scout that was bothering me too.
I knew beforehand that the Guardian SLFs were ill-suited for 1v1 Interceptor combat due to several key issues:
- They have weak Hulls rated for only 10 MJ, so they're highly susceptible to Thargoids' Phasing damage
- They run hot and have no way to cool off / no Silent Running, so no dodging incoming damage without boosting
- Swarms eat SLFs
- Low to moderate damage output vs. Interceptors (hull and hearts)
Luckily, the first two points were solved by keeping my Cutter close to the Interceptor, drawing its focus away from me to allow for uncontested damage. I sidestepped the Swarm problem by going to a Planetary Port CZ as Interceptors don't deploy their swarms near a planet's surface. That just left me to contend with the Trident's low damage output, and while it certainly left much to be desired, it wasn't totally unworkable; I just needed to get good angles on the exposed hearts. In this run, I probably could have taken down the Cyclops using only one fighter if I rode out the Shutdown Field instead of swapping back to my Cutter to use the Field Neutralizer... my NPC pilot decided to immediately fly into the big neon green doom missile 🤦
There's definitely room for me to improve my SLF piloting to make these runs faster (case in point the opening 30 seconds of the video🙃), but it's definitely possible to do this at the Planetary Port CZs if you clear the area of Scouts first.
