Guitarist Eric Johnson Portrait in Oil Paint
29Musician Eric Johnson (@OfficialEricJohnson ) oil on paper. Although I have no aptitude for it whatsoever, I love music. I'm especially partial to stuff from the 80s and 90s, really in most genres, which makes sense given that was right in line with my formative years. I do have a particular soft spot though for guitar-centered music, and have a tremendous respect for the virtuosos of the world. One of my favorites is Eric Johnson, who I think developed one of the most distinctive sounds of any guitarist. Even to my untrained ears, I can recognize an Eric Johnson song pretty easily. Ah Via Musicom and Tones are really classics.
I was watching music videos on YouTube one evening and happened to come across an old favorite, Desert Rose. It was a live performance, but he was just as crisp and precise as any studio recording. On a whim, I thought it might be fun to paint a scene from the video. I had kind of iffy results overall I think - the end result became sort of washed out. I was trying to capture contrast working from dark to lighter, but I went way overboard on the light end. Unfortunate, because I thought this could turn out well. It does slightly look like him, but the resemblance seems to miss out on some defining features to some extent. This painting did set me down a path though that lead to a very high contrast painting, which I hope to share in a few days.
