This painting features a couple of smaller, but somewhat new things. Sometimes I get a sense that I naturally fall into grooves when it comes to art - like a hiker instinctively following a well worn path. I do try to push myself out of comfort zones, even if it's in a small way. With this one, I thought I'd try some different looks and approaches to hair, and try to make a better effort on how shadows hit the hand's unique structure.

This is also an interesting one because there was a point where I thought this one really fell apart completely. I feel this way sometimes, but can usually recover thanks to oil paints flexibility when painting alla prima. But when I first layed down the lip color, I really felt like the painting was going to be awful...like throw it away bad. But I kept working the paint and I think it turned into one I really like!
