Gyakuten!! Puzzle Bancho(u) [逆転!!パズル番長] Game Sample - Arcade
Gyakuten!! Puzzle Bancho(u) is a quirky drop puzzler from Fuuki (Asura Blade, Go! Go! Mile Smile, etc.). GPB roughly translates into "Reversal!! Puzzle Juvenile Delinquent Leader". More loosely and less strictly, you could say that the game is "Reversal!! Delinquent Leader Puzzle" or something along those lines (some say it can also be "Reversal!! Big Boss Puzzle"). For a puzzle game in 1996, it looks pretty neat with quirky characters and some decent animations...as well as the added satisfaction that can only come from a school girl punching a menacing thug in the face. The sound quality leaves quite a bit to be desired, but I suppose the voices and music are okay, even considering that the sound driver (or whatever you want to call it) was pretty mediocre.
The "Reversal" part of the title is very fitting for this game. Sure, you can create a powerful chain to destroy your opponent, but (as you might see in this video) true power comes from being the victim, not by being the aggressor. You see, GPB's junk system has it so that any blocks that get dropped on you can then be turned into blocks of the same color that is broken next to them. You have regular blocks and "double layer" blocks. You can match regular blocks and double layer blocks together, but the best chain is created when you match various double layer blocks in chains. All junk blocks become double layer blocks...so if you have tons of junk on your screen and break them down correctly, you can cause a massive chain reaction (as I did on my third opponent).
As you can tell from this video, the game is pretty challenging and the CPU doesn't play around once you get to the third person. However, if you play your cards right, a more aggressive CPU = a faster defeated opponent. Anyway, it's an okay game.
