Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is an FPS tech demo released by Valve in 2005. The main purpose of this release was to show off the Source engine's HDR rendering (high-dynamic range) capabilities. In this game, you must destroy a combine base in St. Olga that is responsible for firing headcrab shells into the nearby town. Originally, this level was set to take place between Highway 17 and Sandtraps, but it was dropped.
Along with being a tech demo for HDR rendering, Lost Coast was also a testbed for a commentary system that Valve would put into their later games. Players can interact with commentary bubbles in-game, and in Lost Coast, while the commentary is playing, enemy AI is temporarily disabled. In later games, running commentary makes the player invulnerable to damage.
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is available for free for any owners of Half-Life 2 on Steam for Windows or Linux.
