A new version 1.4 of the free beta VR mod for the PC video game Half Life 2 was just released a few days ago. A mod is a modification of a game that is made by fans of the game and generally not released by the developers of the game. Valve the makers of HL2 have released official beta native support for the Oculus Rift Developers kit 1 and 2 also known as DK1 and DK2. This Mod takes that native support and makes it a better Virtual Reality experience. The developers of the mod Wormslayer and NathanAndrews worked their butts off modifying many things in this game for it to run the way it does. They added custom support for the Razer Hydra. The Hydra is a motion tacking dual analog game controller for the PC. Created by Sixense and license by Razer. The hydra can track motion in all 6DOF(6 degrees of freedom). You use this controller in the game to move the gun around naturally. You can wave the gun in front of your face. You can point it in your mouth. You can move it out of the way easily, you can shoot around corners without seeing where the bullets are flying. You can run one way and shoot the other. It has decoupled head viewing and gun aiming. Wormslayer stated that Valves updates for HL2 messed up control mode 1 and 2. control_mode 0 works fine however. I tested mt_control_mode 1 and 2 and can confirm they do not work the way they were designed to. These modes do still sort of work as long as you don't move your feet. If you stand and spin or sit and spin things get really confusing. These modes were designed so you could spin around 360 degrees in your room and play the game without ever having to use a thumb stick to turn. And they use to work like that. I have made many videos Playing HL2VR mod 1.2 and all I ever needed was the one hydra joystick in one hand to move me forwards, backwards, left or right. When you use these modes "Control mode 1 and 2 " you tie 1 of the Hydras to your chest and it tracks your position. The positional tracking still works but what broke is if you turn 180 degrees in you living room and push forwards on the joystick you will move backwards in the game. The chest hydra no longer allows you to move in the direction your chest is facing. So up on the joystick moves you North in the game no matter which way your chest is facing. Problem is if you spin a little you never know where North is/was and you don't know which way your going to go when you push a direction on the joystick. As of now this mod is up on Reddit and Nathan did say he was going to look at Control mode 1 and 2 and try to fix them. Another problem with Control mode 1 and 2 that has never worked properly in any version is that when you sidestep out of cover in the game by physically side stepping in your living room the FPS(First person shooter)Camera moves properly but your characters hit box( the invisible box that the bad guys can see and shoot) does not move with the camera. It stays safely behind cover and the bad guys can't see and shoot you even though you can shoot and see them. Control mode 1 and 2 were described by the developers 9 months ago as Experimental control modes. I think they are the way of the future. Nathan has said he thinks he can fix the hit box problem too but probably not in the next release as he's already working on lots of other things for the mod. Nathan and Wormslayer are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Hydra's successor, the Sixense Stem as neither of their Hydras are working very good anymore. They definitely plan on making these types of control modes work for the Stem system. Unfortunately the Stem will start at $300 for 2 trackers and $389 for 3. I did try to go back to HL2 VR v1.2 but can no longer get it to work so it looks like I will be playing sitting down or at least without moving my feet/spinning until a fix is made. I have not played HL2 VR mod in many months ever sense I discovered the hit box problem. I wish I would of tried it before I updated to 1.4 to see if control mode 2 still worked on v1.2. I suspect that Valve probably would of broke my HLVR mod 1.2 automatically with their auto updates. Or maybe it just updated because I had to select Beta to get 1.4 to run. Now I can't go back. So I thought I should warn you all. Let me know if any of you can still get HLVR 1.2 to work. Lata
