Our last visit to Halibut Creek was on February 2, 2022. Today we return to the city to see all the changes that have transpired since our last visit over one year ago. Though impressive, many travel publications felt the city had looked a bit like an urban slum. They critiqued how buildings were zoned so compactly they were practically touching. Residents echoed this sentiment, saying they felt they were packed in more like sardines rather than halibuts. The city government had decided on a large scale project to thin out the density, bringing more open spaces to the city and give it a friendlier look to attract more tourists.

The initial phase involved redesigning the entrance to Dunlin Metropolitan Airport so the first thing visitors would see upon arrival was a flowery park instead of the imposing industrial steel pyramid structure. Nearby leisure venues and night clubs were demolished to give that district room to breathe and to draw more attention toward the casino. More trees were planted to shield the area from all the noise generated by the airport. To welcome tourists preferring not to fly, the coastal waterfront was provided a cruise ship port with more luxury hotels nearby... at the expense of losing some apartment buildings.

The forestry sector agreed to extend its railway across the river so trains would have a bypass track to deliver products directly to the businesses downtown, reducing vehicle traffic on the bridge. To accommodate the new cargo station, there had to be some thinning of the industry at the north side of the peninsula and the removal of some more apartments and offices. This also permitted for the construction of a new broadcast studio to help promote the artists who would be performing at the new outdoor concert stage downtown.

One major focus was to renovate the central business district, removing some of the larger skyscrapers and providing more parks and walkways between the buildings so people could actually see the sky when venturing there. This allowed new finance oriented offices to fill in the smaller lot sizes. The hospital moved into newer facilities nearby and the removal of the old building cleared the way for the addition of a large plaza and festival stage which will provide more entertainment during the warm summers. As a result, fancier hotels and more modern apartment complexes replaced the dingier ones in the adjacent blocks. Funding also allowed for the construction of two new schools, which will help to further increase the land value of the area.

The central avenue in front of Dowitcher State College was remodeled to feature less intrusive shops while also removing some of the single family houses. In turn, the block was converted into a commons area with nicer apartment style housing for students. Likewise, the sprawling row of high rises on the back side of the campus were turned into smaller condos which would be far more affordable for the people attending college. A bicycle bridge was also added to span the bay, allowing for students to commute for further away.

There are many more smaller changes, so try to spot them all in the video! Is the city nicer than it had been? Would you be more tempted to spend your vacation in Halibut Creek after these renovations? Of course, we lost 10,000 citizens in the process who did not care for the changes, but that is a small price to pay (though the loss of their tax revenue was not). The city will keep working on its updates in order to draw those people back to Halibut Creek, so who knows what the city will look like in one more year.

As before, this is a vanilla build and will continue to be so. The only workshop assets are a handful of trees to help bring more nature to the city :)
