Hall Pass is a 2011 comedy movie that opens in U.S. theaters on February 25, 2011. The film stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as Rick and Fred, two married best friends whose wives offer them a "hall pass" of sorts: one week off from marriage to do whatever they want - including having an extramarital affair. Rick and Fred soon realize that while they have the freedom to pursue anyone and everyone, their wives do as well. Hall Pass is co-written and directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly (There's Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, Fever Pitch).
Reviews for Hall Pass began coming out several days before the film's release. Overall, reviews were mixed or average, to poor. On February 24, 2011, Hall Pass garnered a 30 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer." The film scored a slightly better 45 out of a possible 100 on Metacritic.com.
Major movie critics who offered average or somewhat favorable reviews for Hall Pass, including critic Richard Roeper, seemed to feel that the film did offer a "handful of big laughs." Roeper says while Hall Pass is "nothing new from the Farrelly brothers," he'd give it a "mild recommendation." Owen Glieberman of Entertainment Weekly says Hall Pass "makes a novel statement about the sex wars: It says that they're essentially over," adding that guys "have lost." Variety's Andrew Barker writes that while some of the "stabs at grown-up insight miss their targets," Hall Pass "still packs more pure comedic punch than the Farrellys' last few offerings."
Several critics who didn't seem to like Hall Pass brought up the Farrelly brothers' ability to "gross-out" movie audiences with their films. Christy Lemire of the Associated Press says the brothers "continue to strain desperately for their gross-out glory days with Hall Pass," but they fall short on getting laughs. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter says while the movie does have some "slapstick and action comedy interludes," they are "haphazardly executed at best."
Whether reviews are good or bad (or just so-so), the AP predicts that the appeal of a Farrelly brothers comedy will be a big draw for moviegoers, who will put Hall Pass atop the weekend box office in its opening weekend.
