Mahalo expert Justin Z. gives a tutorial on the Photoshop direct selection tool.

About the Direct Selection Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Direct Selection Tool is a handy tool that allows you to manipulate paths. Path Selection is something you create with either the Pen Tool or the Shape Tool that can allow you to create new layers or masks that allow for fully-controllable selections.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. To use the Direct Selection Tool, click on the black arrow icon on the
Tool Bar (leftmost side of your screen).
2. Two options will appear and you will want to select the white arrow feature. Click on a previously-created path and drag any point of that path. You can manipulate each of these points based on what type of point they are.

3. You can easily switch between this tool and the Path Selection Tool by pressing Command/Control + a mouse click and clicking and dragging them. The tool serves as support for the path tools that allow you to create shapes and masks.
