Mahalo Windows expert Sean Hewitt gives a tutorial on using the control panel for Windows 7.

Control Panel Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Control Panel is useful for controlling settings on your Windows 7 computer. To access the Control Panel, click on the Start menu (bottom left of the screen) and then click on Control Panel.

This will prompt a new menu titled, Adjust your computer's settings. Here you will find System and Security, Network and Internet, Hardware and Sound, Programs, User Accounts and Family Safety, Appearance and Personalization, Clock, Language and Region and Ease of Access.

If you are a Windows XP user and want to adjust the layout to be more familiar, click on the Category link in the upper right corner of the screen, followed by Large or Small Icons.

System and Security
---------------------------------------------------------------------

System and Security contains the Action Center. If your firewall is down or any software needs to be updated you will be alerted. Windows Update is its own category within this list that you may choose to open. You may also view your System information, Backup and Restore your files and perform a Windows Anytime Upgrade. You can upgrade to Professional or Ultimate Windows software. Administrative Tools allows you to free up disk space and defragment your hard drive.

Network and Internet
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Click the Back button (arrow in upper left corner of screen) to return to the Control Panel. Network and Internet is where you can view your network and choose a homegroup.

Hardware and Sound
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardware and Sound is where you can add a printer and adjust the sound on your computer.

Programs
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Programs is where you add a program or uninstall a program to your system.

User Account and Family Safety
---------------------------------------------------------------------

User Account and Family Safety is where you can add an account, delete an account, turn on a guest account and modify the accounts you have.

Appearance and Personalization
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Appearance and Personalization is where you can change your background, screensaver, icon size, text size and also the color of Windows.

Clock, Language and Region
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Clock, Language and Region allows you to modify these items. For example, you can add a second time zone to your clock.

Ease of Access
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Ease of Access allows you to modify Windows. For instance, if you wanted your computer to read text to you from the screen or an on-screen keyboard or to magnify the items on your screen, you can do that here.
