Japan had Gen-San, we had Hammerin'Harry. Apart from that, the game on NES have little differences to the famicom version. The pepper in PAL cartridge becomes a potion, and power ups are a little different. A couple of enemies are reskinned, but that's all.
This game is a console port of a well known arcade: 大工の源さん 〜べらんめ町騒動記〜 (Hammerin'Harry again). Strange enough, this game was ported in Japanese area, and in Europe... but not in the USA. It's uncommon, as far as Nes goes.
Gen san is featured in several other games, up to PSP era. As far as 8 bit platform goes, this one is cute and very fun, albeit quite short. There is a longer version on SNES, which i may record someday.
The gameplay is fine I guess. There are a couple of interesting things. First of all, I managed to glitch last boss. I went too quick in stacking hits on him, and rendered him invincible. I have to die on him to reset. As you can see from the record, he's back in detecting hits on the second try (and he dies).
Then, since I used only the stock lives, and made no game overs, in my head this one counts as 1cc. Hope you don't mind.
As usual, this one (as all my playthroughs) use NO savestates. In my opinion, playing this way gives a footage more attuned to game and level design than save-state-fuelled runs. When i feel like editing videos, i'll do a review, not a playthrough.
Original cartridge recorded on Nintendo Control Deck Pal (Type A region lock), with Retrotink2x and Avermedia Live Mini. Played on CRT with a original NES controller, square type.
