Handbrake H.264 H.265 HEVC Encoder Speed Test X265 X264 VS Video Toolbox Native ARM Apple Silicon M1
In this video I'm comparing the native ARM beta version of Handbrake running tests to compare H.265 HEVC & H.264 AVC software encoding vs hardware encoding. This uses Apple Video Toolbox as the hardware encoder and X265 & X264 for the software encoders.
The computer being used is an Apple Mac Mini which has the Apple Silicon M1 SoC processor. The video encoding software being used is Handbrake. This version of Handbrake is 1.4.0 which is a beta that runs native on ARM on Apple Silicon.
The tests are basic software encoding vs hardware encoding.
The first test is Handbrake H.264 AVC encoding. For this test I'm using X264 as the H.264 AVC software video encoder and Apple Video Toolbox as the H.264 AVC hardware video encoder.
The second test is Handbrake H.265 HEVC encoding. This second test is using X265 as the H.265 HEVC software video encoder and once again, Apple Video Toolbox as the H.265 HEVC hardware video encoder.
The input source file is an MP4 H.265 video file that is 10 Bit, 4:2:0 chroma sub sampling, 4K UHD, 24 FPS and at a bit rate of 100Mbs.
All video encodes are 8 Bit because Apple Video Toolbox is 8 Bit.
