“Haunted Castle” is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Konami and released in 1987/1988. It’s the second arcade installment in the Castlevania series. The game features a unique storyline and gameplay, separate from its console counterparts.
The protagonist of the game is Simon, who embarks on a mission to rescue his wife Selena from Dracula. The game is divided into six stages, each ending with a boss fight. Simon’s main weapon is a whip, which can be upgraded to the Morning Star and then to a sword. He can also acquire various sub-weapons for different attack strategies.
When you come into contact with an enemy or trap, your energy (E) decreases.
This work does not have the concept of “remaining lives”, and the game is over when either energy or TIME becomes 0. The continue has a slightly special format, and there are two methods prepared: increase the energy by a certain amount by inserting a credit (coin) and pressing the start button during play, and insert a credit at the time of game over and start over from the beginning of that stage. However there is a limit of a total of 3 times.
The movement of the main character is slower than the Famicom/NES version, so it's quite difficult to avoid enemies and traps. Some of the skeletons that appear frequently from the second stage become undead ghosts and attack again immediately after being defeated, but the difficulty is increased because they can only be identified by the voice when they are defeated. On the other hand, the sub-weapon pocket watch, which is invalid for the bosses in the second half of the Famicom version, is effective in all stages and bosses, and the difficulty is suppressed drastically in this respect. After the ending, the second loop, where the difficulty increases further with faster enemy movements, etc., begins.
