Higurashi Ch.4 (Pt 7): Neo, Having an Epiphany, Swears to Solve the Mystery of Hinamizawa's Demise
[BLIND LET'S PLAY]
Fast-forward to the present day, Neo, Akasaka and Akasaka's young daughter find themselves meeting up with a retired Ooshi. Akasaka and Ooshi take the time to fill each other in on what they've been up to since they last saw each other in Hinamizawa over half a decade ago, and reminiscence over the events. Akasaka tells Ooshi about how he raised his daughter on his own after his wife died during his case in Hinamizawa, and ever since then he's continued his line of work, now much more experienced than he was when he and Ooshi first met. Meanwhile, Ooshi tells Akasaka about how he acts as a consultant for police agencies while also enjoying activities like ballroom dancing.
Discussions like these continue on for a while, until the topic of the Great Hinamizawa Disaster from 1 year ago is brought up... and how the entire area is still uninhabitable due to the gases effect on the place and the quarantine that's been in place ever since. They both comment on the tragedy of it all, yet its clear there's a sense of unease plaguing them both over the incident and just how little information there actually is that explains what happened in the village and the surrounding region. On top of that, there's still the issue surrounding the mysterious string of murders and disappearances that occured over 5 years leading up to the disaster. Akasaka then remembers Rika Furude, and Ooshi tells him of the horrible way in which she was murdered right before the disaster took place.
It is then that Akasaka slowly begins to realize that everything that Rika told him when she made her predictions over what would occur over the next 5 years after the kidnapping incident in Hinamizawa had come to pass, and with this realization comes another realization: the REAL reason Rika reached out to Akasaka and told him of these predictions... and the real reason hits both him and Neo hard. To make matters worse, it is around this time that Neo and Akasaka both realize the implications behind Rika's predictions having come true...
When Akasaka expresses regret over his inability to realize all this information a lot sooner, Ooshi shares his own regrets over the last several years leading up to the Disaster and how it ultimately screwed up his own efforts to uncover the truth of what was really occurring in Hinamizawa at the time. He tells Akasaka that if he's serious about wanting to make things up to Rika, and by extension everyone who died in Hinamizawa, then they'll need to work together to uncover the truth of what really happened, since Rika's predictions seem to provide a massive clue that indicates that something more sinister than either of them ever realized had to have been happening in Hinamizawa, and that everyone in the village ended up paying for it with their lives...
