Former Aircraft Carrier and now the Royal Navy's newest helicopter and commando platform, HMS Illustrious, has celebrated her 30th Birthday.

The celebration took place at Portsmouth Naval Base.

Rushed to service in 1982 during the Falklands campaign she is just a year into her new role.

Members of the ships company came to pay their respects to a ship that has been described as versatile and faithful servant to the nation.

Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of her late royal highness Princess Margaret, inspected the company and The First Sea Lord; Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope was present also.
