Horizon Forbidden West
Protagonist Aloy will be exploring a different setting this time, as she heads west, taking us through a wider variety of landscapes, from grasslands and forests, to vast deserts and palm-peppered beaches. Apparently, Aloy’s far-future journey will cover what was once the western United States, from Utah to the Pacific Ocean, with the range of climates that implies.
According to de Jonge, the size of the map will be “a bit bigger” than in the first game, and we hope it is only a bit. Zero Dawn may not have been as vast as some open-world games, but it was still substantial and stuffed with memorable sights and encounters. While more might be better in terms of fully exploiting the potentials of different biomes, we don’t want much repetition or dilution.
One thing that’s clear, especially with the new footage shown this year, is that even if the world isn’t that much wider, it will be deeper. With her new diving mask, Aloy will be spending a lot more time diving down into lakes and seas to see what’s submerged out of view.
We have to hope she’ll have something new to defend herself within these sequences – nothing’s been shown in the footage yet – as the idea of swimming undetected between the crocodile-like Snapmaws feels pretty daunting.

Horizon Forbidden West is an action role-playing game played from the third-person perspective. Players control Aloy, a huntress in a world populated by dangerous machines. Set in an open world, the game will explore the mysterious frontier known as the Forbidden West, a post-apocalyptic version of the western United States, specifically the states of California, Nevada, and Utah.[1] The map will be larger than in the previous game, filled with secrets that lie beneath ruins from the world of the Old Ones. The game will feature a multitude of recognizable locations including a ruined San Francisco and the Yosemite Valley with various biomes.[2][3] One of the main additions to the sequel is the element of underwater exploration.[4] Players will be able to uncover the mysteries beneath the surface of seas, lakes and rivers.[5] The game will also feature enhanced melee combat, revamped climbing mechanics and improved traversal options over the original game with the addition of the Valor Surge system, freeform climbing and tools such as the Shieldwing, Focus Scanner, Diving Mask and Pullcaster.
Horizon Forbidden West continues the story of Aloy, a young huntress of the Nora tribe, as she leads a band of companions on a quest to the arcane frontier known as the Forbidden West to find the source of a mysterious plague that kills all it infects. On her journey across these uncharted lands, Aloy encounters new and unfamilar regions ravaged by massive storms and deadly machines, and comes into conflict with an army of nomadic raiders who have managed to tame the machines for use as war mounts. She also discovers a vast array of environments and ecosystems, including lush valleys, dry deserts, snowy mountains, tropical beaches and ruined cities, both above and below the water.

Some people were disappointment at the eventual confirmation that Horizon Forbidden West is a cross-generation release for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, but that’s given way to excitement. Since that time, Sony has released several game trailers each of which looks more and more spectacular than the last – screenshots of the PS4 version look pretty great too.
The game engine has been overhauled with a new facial animation system which will please those who thought the characters were rather expressionless in the first game, there’s a new crowd system and plenty of fancy new graphical features that will show off the power of the PlayStation 5. Guerrilla Games are also pushing the game design forward to give Aloy and players many new gameplay possibilities. Things like new attacks in combat, the new free climbing system, the Pullcaster grappling hook and Shieldwing to let Aloy glide down from vantage points she reaches – just check out the gameplay reveal from last summer.

Finally, there have been a couple of important developments since that first trailer. We now know that Horizon isn’t only a PS5 title but will also come to PS4. This news came as a surprise to some, especially at a time when Sony has been trying to emphasise the new-gen attributes of its tent-pole PS5 releases.
Still, Guerrilla recently released screenshots of the PS4 version and it has to be said that they’re still very impressive. For now it looks like PS5 owners will need to be happy enough that the increased resolution and detail, quicker loading times, haptic feedback and 3D audio they’ll get in their new-gen version will be sufficiently cutting edge.
From what we’ve seen so far, Guerrilla Games seems to have its priorities straight.
