How Brazil almost DIDN'T QUALIFY for a World Cup
Perhaps now they don’t receive the plaudits they deserve, but the fact remains that Brazil absolutely romped to their last World Cup success twenty years ago now as they beat the likes of Turkey, Belgium, England and Germany.
But they almost didn’t make it.
In the four years since their 3-0 demise in the Stade de France, Ronaldo had barely played any football. He helped Brazil win the 1999 Copa America but didn’t take part in any of Brazil’s tumultuous qualification campaign that needed to be rescued by Luiz Felipe Scolari’s mid-campaign appointment.
Before Scolari’s appointment, Brazil were only two points ahead of sixth-placed Colombia and in real danger of not qualifying for the next phase. Out of the five teams fighting for the final four spots, Brazil earned the best record to qualify, but only on the final day with a win in Venezuela.
Today, we take Brazil’s place and hand it to Colombia.
