How Color and Lighting can Tell Stories in Animation and Filmmaking - Minecraft Animation Tips
A very overlooked aspect of filmmaking an animation is Color and Lighting, this video goes through the importance of Color and Lighting for animations with the tools of trade used by professional film gaffers and colorists. You can't miss this video!
This video goes through the basic lighting setup they teach you in film school, three point lighting. I teach you how to use the key, fill, and back light elements of three point lighting in Cinema4D to light your Minecraft animations like a pro.
Furthermore, I also delve into different types of light and how they affect your scene, the difference between a diffuse and spot light as well as the difference between a hard and soft light.
I also run you through my BIGGEST TIP to saving time in rendering- that is to NOT USE GLOBAL ILLUMINATION and instead FAKE Global Illumination by using the Ambient Lights of Cinema4D. This speeds up rendering by almost 2x!
The second half of the video is focused on Color and its effects on the audience's mood as well as how it can be used as a powerful tool for storytelling.
I talk a bit about white balancing blue and orange, the two natural color temperatures real filmmakers have to deal with, and explain why I prefer to use white lights to ensure smoother color grading later on.
When it comes down to creative uses of color, I give many examples of how different colors trigger different responses in different people. The prime example I use is how the color "red" has a different effect on western audiences compared to eastern ones.
Finally, I go into how I've personally used the powerful tools that are lighting and color in my Minecraft Animated Web Series, Levaslier. I explain the subtext of why I used the color "purple" for the City of Hemrage and it's King, Ulfriind. I also give an extra point that color can be used as a signifier or a callback.
DISCLAIMER: Gaffing is not my forte, I am primarily an editor, VFX artist, animator, and colorist. Thanks to Shravan for checking for me.
