How Gareth Bale could've stayed at Tottenham
I think it was Giorgio Chiellini who put it best, catching his breath post-match after a last 16 in 2018 when he said: “This is the history of Tottenham.”
And until 2019, he was almost entirely correct.
Whilst Tottenham Hotspur had been successful in Europe before (1963 Cup Winners’ Cup winners as well as UEFA Cup winners in 1972 and 1984), it had been a long, long time, and they hadn’t really proven themselves to be up to much in the Champions League.
Regardless: since 2006, there have been only four seasons where Spurs haven’t been playing in Europe come the knockout phases—once where they failed to qualify in 2009-10 and the other earlier this year after bailing out of the inaugural Conference League season early.
We’re more concerned with their group stage eliminations from 2011-12’s Europa League and the 2016-17 Champions League, and this is what we’ll cover over the next two days.
