How Netherlands went from FINALS to NOT QUALIFYING
The Netherlands are a curious footballing beast, failing to qualify for a major international tournament in the post-war age until 1974 but when they got there, my word did they give us a good time.
From Johan Cruyff’s dazzling total football team that crumbled against the hosts in 1974, to Rob Rensenbrink hitting a post in the last minute against the hosts four years on: the Netherlands have left us wanting more like no other team in World Cup history.
That remains true of the two tournaments either side of the glory days of the 1970s: of 1970 when Dutch football was on the brink of a boom period but failed to beat Bulgaria to qualify, and of 1982 when the glory days were well behind Dutch football but still: defeat in France ensured they missed out. This week we tackle both.
