The magical world of Harry Potter began in 1997 with a little young adult fantasy book that, in 1999 it was bought up by Warner Brothers and led to the hit 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Or Sorcerer’s Stone — it kinda depends on what part of the Muggle world you come from. This in turn led to an immensely popular and profitable series of films that’s still chugging along to this day thanks to the Fantastic Beasts series. In this video we take an abbreviated look at the many methods used to fashion a massive blockbuster juggernaut, from puppetry to CGI, and how the filmmakers made Hagrid so massive, the Basilisk so frightening, and Voldemort so, uh, noseless. Additionally we consider production designer Stuart Craig’s creation of Hogwarts and how he developed it over time, Dobby’s CGI in the days of Gollum, and how the series influenced both pop culture and the fanbase itself.
