How the "JUMP!" and "SLIDE!" Warnings Work in Mega Man 8

The warnings are timed to tell you the optimal moment to jump or slide if you are in the center of the screen.
The general rule is to perform the action on the second time you hear the warning voice or when the blue light on the sign flashes.
Once you understand this, you can multi-task fighting enemies while navigating without too many problems.
Now after that in Wily Stage 1 since the jumps are stretched much further, the challenge becomes jumping further ahead (holding forward on the d-pad) and finding the room to go back to the left side of the screen before the next action.
Also note that the JUMP! sign always appears in the top right corner while the SLIDE! sign always appear in the lower right corner.
