About this video: Adding more RAM to Minecraft 1.18.2 is a great way to reduce lag and increase game performance. However, knowing how much RAM you should add to Minecraft can be a bit challenging. Luckily, in this video, we show you not only how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft 1.18.2, but also how much RAM you should dedicate to Minecraft 1.18.2 for modded and vanilla.
First things first though, how to do you see the amount of RAM you have dedicated to Minecraft in-game? Well, this is actually really simple. Just hit F3 on your keyboard. Then, look in the top right. You will see the amount of RAM Minecraft has in MB. You can also see the real time amount of RAM that Minecraft 1.18.2 is using.
So now to you know how to see the amount of RAM Minecraft is using, but how do you allocate more RAM to Minecraft 1.18.2? Well, open up the Minecraft Launcher, click ‘installations’ at the top, and hover over the installation you want to add more RAM to. Then, click the three dots and select ‘edit’. Click ‘More Options’, and scroll down to see ‘JVM Arguments’. At the beginning of this text box, you will see ‘-Xmx2G’. The number may be different. However, ‘NumberG’ represents how much RAM you have. 2GB in this case.
To add more RAM to Minecraft 1.18.2, change this number. For example ‘-Xmx4G’ is 4GB or RAM. ‘-Xmx6G’ is 6GB. How much RAM do you need to dedicate to Minecraft you ask? Well, for vanilla Minecraft 2GB is usually enough. However, 4GB can be allocated if you want to be safe.
How much RAM should you add to modded Minecraft? Well, most modpacks need 4 to 6GB of RAM. However, some really intense modpacks will need 8GB of RAM dedicated.
Overall though, you should never allocate more than half of your computer’s RAM to Minecraft 1.18.2. You can see this by opening the ‘System Information’ app on your PC and checking installed physical memory.
Nevertheless, make sure you save after adding more RAM to Minecraft. You can then go in game and see the new amount of RAM reflected in the F3 menu!
