OBS allows you to record in MKV and automatically convert the videos to MP4 once you have stopped recording. This is useful as videos recorded in the MKV won't have their audio tracks corrupted if ended abruptly. This feature makes it the better format for recording longer videos.

You can also convert existing MKV videos to MP4 using the OBS remux system. Remuxing a video will convert it from one file type to MP4 without losing any audio tracks or quality.
