How To Block Microsoft Edge Chromium from Using Windows Update Forced Auto Install on January 15th 2020

The scheduled release for the long awaited Chromium based Edge Browser is the 15th January 2020. This will automatically be installed as part of the Windows Update feature.

For some users this is not a welcome addition to the OS and will want to block it. There is an official Chromium Edge Install Blocker from Microsoft which can be used via a command line or added to the Group Policies.

Another way is to add a Registry key and string to disable the forced update.

Copy and paste the following into a notepad document and then save the file as a .reg file and double click the registry file to add it to your system registry.

copy this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate]
"DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium"=dword:00000001
