How To Boot Into SteamOS Desktop
How exactly do you enable auto-login for #SteamOS? What if you want to boot directly into the Linux desktop mode?
This is a pretty common question I see asked in the Steam Community and on Reddit. Since SteamOS is just a GNU/Linux distribution with a new GUI on top of it, all the normal "auto-login" steps apply all the same.
Most users won't want to do this for a number of reasons. But for power users (like myself), this is an awesome feature. Just follow these steps:
• Enable "Linux Desktop" mode from the Settings - Interface menu.
• Switch to Desktop Mode
• Go to the Settings - Users menu
• Select the SteamOS Desktop user account
• Toggle automatic login from "Off" to "On".
Keep in mind that SteamOS itself and the Linux Desktop are two completely different users; Steam games you've installed under your normal Steam user account will not appear under the Linux Desktop user.
Also, remember that Valve did not intend for SteamOS to be used as a desktop OS.
