Are you a streamer on Twitch that is looking for a game to play, but do not know which one? Check out my analysis. Hint, choosing a big game like Apex, COD Warzone, or Fortnite will not get you discovered right away!

TERMS USED:

"Above the Fold": When you say "above the fold", it means when scrolling down in a website, the material you want is kind of the front page. So when I say that if you need 2,500 viewers to be "above the fold", its the gamers way or the nerdy way of saying "the front page"

FAQ FOR THIS TOPIC
NOTE: This can apply to Facebook and YouTube as well, but mostly based on a Twitch perspective

1) Why Apex, Fortnite, and COD Warzone does not help in terms of new streamers?

A) These three are the most popular games on Twitch (and YouTube/Facebook for that matter). There are over 2,000 streamers who play these games and just getting to "above the fold" is about 2K viewers each. Unless you know how to also reach on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, you won't be discovered as well with these games on Twitch.

2) Indie Games or Mario Games / Classic Games?

A) In my opinion, if you are a new streamer on Twitch, I would highly suggest go for the Mario games. Even though it says more than 2000 viewers, when looking through the streamers playing the game, if you get more than around 20 viewers, you are "above the fold". Indie games would be a great second choice if you have a second source of content like a Youtube channel. The reason is that Indie games tend to start their rise on YouTube thanks to videos.

3) Is there a "You gotta be Good in Apex, Warzone, Fortnite to get Discovered" meta in terms of those games?

A) In this talk, I did say that you have to be good in these three games. This is true for those who plan on in the future, try to join a ESports team or sign deals for said game, but for a smaller streamer, not only you have to be good at these three games, you also need to have at least a YouTube channel for some type of discoverable content that leads to Twitch. For example, game guides, tutorials, walkthroughs. Once you establish this, then you might get a shot at these three games even as a small streamer.

4) Does the game I choose actually matter?

A) Yes it does on many factors. Don't just pick a game just because YOU like it, pick a game because YOUR COMMUNITY AND YOU like it. Let's look at some of my example picks:

Picking a game like Hypercharge Unboxed (interesting game btw) might interest you because of childhood nostalgia, but not interest your community because of too many bot lobbies in online multiplayer.

Picking a game like Coromon (currently playing) might interest you AND your community because it reminds you of Pokemon (both in name and concept) and the fact that there are interesting puzzles and twists (review coming after playing) , and the fact that you can change rules on the fly. Naming Coromon can give your community a chance to be part of the adventure.

5) If I see on Twitch that in search results that no one is playing that game, did I make a wrong choice?

If the game in question is a game that has been out for at least 2-3 years and very few or none are playing it, then in this case, it might be a poor choice of game, but if the game in question is more of a game that recently came out or is an indie game, in this case, you actually made a good choice because you will be like one of the first to check it out and show it off to your audience. If you are lucky, you might be the top streamer for said game/indie game

6) What about Minecraft?

A) Minecraft has a special case. If you have been posting Minecraft content on YouTube and streaming as well, it is a game that can get you discovered. There is an additional catch. For Minecraft, you also have to follow their community in terms of Twitter, Discord, etc so that you can participate in events and show off some things to the community. In game, you also have to be creative to make the community like your content. For example, someone has made a "Survivor: Minecraft Edition" type of thing, where they take the Survivor game show on CBS, and made it possible in Minecraft.
