TIP 1: Think about what games you like. You will be playing this game a lot so it might as well be something you like and can tolerate easily.
TIP 2: You should be okay with not playing casually again. This isn't required per se, but realize that in speedrunning a game, it becomes much harder to go back and play something casually in the conventional sense of the word in gaming.
TIP 3: What is the length of time of the run? This should be a prime consideration as there are only so many hours someone has to devote to speedrunning or anything else. Check speedrun.com for information on times of games and their respective categories.
TIP 4: Think about what your goals for the video game are. Do you want to speedrun this for fun or go for World Record? Also, do you have goals of turning speedrunning into a side hustle or full time gig if you also stream it? The game you decide on should fit into these questions properly based on time constraints what can be invested into it.
TIP 5: Think about how well optimized the game is. Is this something where it will require a serious undertaking of routing before it is ready or can you just pick it up and run it from the get go?
TIP 6: What is the complexity of the run and what are you comfortable with? This too will affect amount of time needed to do runs invariably.
TIP 7: What is your preference for: heavier or lesser RNG? This affects time but also just how a runner and viewer at that enjoys a run.
TIP 8: Watch some runs to get a feel for what the run is about. Check speedrun.com or better yet Twitch for people streaming attempts of the game you are interested in.
TIP 9: What genre is your favorite or your preference? This will impact enjoyability but also probably ease/complexity required in learning a game of your choosing.
TIP 10: What hardware is required? If you are going for leader board times, this is usual a more prominent consideration. Early on in learning a game, this may be (and should be) less important.
TIP 11: Ask runners of the game how it is. Ask them what they honestly think of the run and their ideas about someone new getting into it. Ask questions.
TIP 12: Try some runs or partial runs, even mini categories of games to establish a feel for what you think of the game. If a small base level of notes is available, even meandering through the first few splits of a run is typically feasible. And for retro speedrunners, emulators can come in handy big here.
