Video Transcript:
With the rollout of iOS 13 for iPhone and iPad OS in late 2019, Apple introduced functionality that lets users create their own iMessage profile using a picture and a name of their choosing that will be shared with other iMessage users. If you want to take it a step further, you can choose to use a created memoji as your profile picture, or you can easily create a new memoji entirely. Finally, Apple does give you control over who you share your iMessage profile with.
Now let's walk through the steps to set up an iMessage profile using memoji on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1. Tap to launch the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad home screen. The Settings screen appears.
Step 2. Scroll down the Settings screen, and then tap "Messages." The Messages screen is displayed.
Step 3. Tap "Share Name and Photo." A screen appears asking if you want to share your name and a photo with your friends. Tap "Choose Name and Photo" at the bottom of this screen if you want to move forward. The Choose Your Name and Photo screen appears, where you'll see a row of photo suggestions that may include memoji you've created and the photo you've set as your Apple ID profile picture. Additionally, you'll see the first and last name associated with your Apple ID in the Display Name section.
Step 4. Swipe over to the end of the profile photo options until you see View More, and then tap "View More." In the Animoji section, you can choose any memoji you've created, or any of the animoji, or you can tap the "plus" sign to create a new memoji that you can use as your iMessage profile photo. In this example, I'll use a memoji I created previously. When you select a memoji or an animoji, you'll be prompted to strike a pose that will be used as your iMessage profile with your memoji. After capturing you're memoji pose, you'll be prompted to move and scale your memoji. Tap "Choose" after moving and posing your memoji for your iMessage profile. Next, you'll be prompted to choose a color for your profile background. Tap any of the available options. You'll return to the preview screen where a preview of your iMessage profile with your chosen memoji appears. Tap "Done" when you're finished setting up your iMessage profile memoji. You'll return to the Choose Your Name and Photo screen.
Step 5. Tap either your first or last name to make them editable. Enter the first and last names you want people to see, and then tap "Return" when you're finished to return to the main screen.
Step 6. Tap "Continue" at the bottom of the screen when you're done selecting your iMessage profile photo and name. A dialog box appears asking if you want to use this photo everywhere, including for your Apple ID and My Card in your Contacts app. In this example, I'll choose "Use." The next screen asks you to choose who you share your name and photo with in iMessage. You can choose to only share this information with contacts the next time you send them a message, or you can choose to be prompted before this information is shared with other people so you can verify you want to share it. I'll choose "Always Ask" to be asked so I can verify before this information is shared. Tap "Done" after making your selection.
You'll be returned to the Messages part of the Settings app, where you can now see your selection for how you share your name and photo in iMessage on your iPhone or iPad.
You can turn off and stop sharing your iMessage profile at any time by tapping "Share Name and Photo" in the Messages part of the Settings app, and then toggling off "Name and Photo Sharing" on the next screen.
