Ultimately it's about controlling your consumerist instincts. So what if a given game is 80% off at the PS Store if I don't have any time to play it? Better to buy it in the future, if and when I have time to play it, even if I have to pay a little bit extra. It'll be money better spent, instead of purchasing something I'll potentially never play.
There's a huge split between people with more time than money (teenagers, students) and people with more money than time (working folk, parents). The former tend to fret about backlogs, the latter tend no to.
A backlog is very much a result of growing up and finding less time to play the games you absolutely want to play. And that is what a back log is supposed to mean, right? Not a long list of games you randomly picked up over many years of Steam sales and have not played yet. But the standout games that you really want to play, that you bought with clear intent and were hyped about but haven't had enough time to play yet, while more games you are interested in keep getting released.
Stop buying new games you won't play. Seriously, stop it. Stop saying "Oh what a great deal" or "Ah I've heard so much about this I'll pick it up" or whatever other excuse you use to buy games you don't actually want to play.
If you ever actually want to play that game, you'll be able to buy it.
