In Survival mode, resources are essential for building and crafting things. One of the rare resources are diamonds. The best place to find them is the Y coordinates 5-12, but how do you know what level you are on? Basically, if you didn't know, you can view your distance from the bedrock layer by pressing the "F3" key, which will show your current coordinates. This is a quick estimate of how deep you are.

They are most common in levels 5-13
Never directly dig down as you may hit lava or fall in a deep cave, do a 1 block distance down for stairs so you can go up and down easily. If you encounter a cave, remember to LIGHT IT UP!! Hint hint- make sure you bring these things. More than two pickaxes, some wood, a crafting table, more than one sword, two chests and a lot of food. (You could make a farm underground), these are the basic things you should prepare on a mining expedition, (these are the things we bring lol)
Caves or caverns are naturally formed cavities in the stone layer of a map. They are often very deep and can go from the surface all the way to bedrock. Caverns are not ravines but will often lead into them. If the cave or place is not illuminated, they will often spawn dangerous mobs such as skeletons, zombies, spiders, creepers, etc.
You should never go into a cavern without a good supply of any lighting and weapons. We recommend you leave your valuables in a safe place on the surface. But if these valuables are from the cavern itself, make sure to have a chest to put them in. Also, remember to bring LOTS AND LOTS of pickaxes. We normally bring lots of stone pickaxes and a iron pick, but it's your choice!
Caverns are huge and can have numerous intersecting tunnels, making them easy to get lost in. Getting lost in a cavern can be very dangerous, since getting lost in a cavern for too long may easily drain your hunger, saturation, weapon and armor durability, leaving you hungry and vulnerable to attacks, both of which could cause your death. So if the cave is large, you can place blocks that are not from that environment there like a trail to get back home!
