How to Fix Black Screen with External Monitor on Steam Deck (Force Low Resolution)
Experiencing a black screen when connecting your Steam Deck to an external monitor can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Check Connections: Ensure all cables are securely connected. Sometimes, a loose HDMI or USB-C connection can cause display issues.
Restart the Steam Deck: Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force a restart. This can help reset any temporary glitches.
Enter BIOS Mode:
Shut down the Steam Deck by holding the power button for 15 seconds.
Press and hold the Volume Up (+) button and then press the power button. Keep holding the Volume Up button until you hear a chime. This will take you to the BIOS menu.
Update Firmware:
Enable Developer Mode: Go to Settings - System - Enable Developer Mode.
Show Advanced Update Channels: In Developer Settings, turn on ‘Show Advanced Update Channels’.
Set OS Update Channel to ‘Main’: Go to Settings - System and set the OS Update Channel to ‘Main’. Apply the update and restart the Steam Deck.
Adjust Display Settings:
Sometimes, the issue can be due to incompatible display settings. Try lowering the refresh rate or changing the resolution to match your monitor’s capabilities.
Sleep Mode Trick:
With the Steam Deck connected to the dock, put the system in Sleep mode by tapping the power button.
Wait a few seconds, then tap the power button again to wake it up. This can sometimes reset the display connection
