How to Format USB Storage to use on FIRE TV (Easy Method)
Formatting a USB drive for use with an Amazon Fire TV (e.g., Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick with OTG cable) ensures compatibility for external storage (media files) or internal storage (apps). The process varies slightly depending on your Fire TV model and whether you format directly on the device or via a computer. Below are the steps to format a USB drive for Fire TV use.
Step 1: Choose a Compatible USB Drive
Recommended: USB 3.0 flash drive (up to 128 GB) for optimal performance. USB 2.0 drives work but may be slower.
File System:
FAT32: Required for all Fire TV devices (Cube, Stick) when used as external storage for media. Limits file sizes to 4 GB.
NTFS: Supported only on Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen for external storage.
Note: External hard drives are not officially supported and may require external power, so stick with flash drives for reliability.
Step 2: Format the USB Drive on Fire TV (Preferred Method)
Fire TV devices can format the USB drive directly, ensuring compatibility. This is the easiest method for most users.
Connect the USB Drive:
Fire TV Cube: Plug the USB drive into the USB port on the back of the Cube.
Fire TV Stick: Use a micro-USB OTG cable with a USB-A port for the drive and a micro-USB port for power. Connect the OTG cable to the Fire TV Stick, plug the USB drive into the USB-A port, and connect a 10W (2A) power adapter to the OTG cable’s power port. Then plug the Stick into your TV’s HDMI port.
Ensure the Fire TV is powered on and running Fire OS 7 or later (check in Settings, My Fire TV, About, Check for Updates).
Detect the USB Drive:
The Fire TV should automatically detect the drive and display a notification prompting you to format it. If no prompt appears, navigate to Settings, My Fire TV, USB Drive.
Choose Format Type:
Format to External Storage: For storing media files (e.g., MP4, MP3) to play via apps like VLC, NOVA Video Player, or Kodi. This keeps the drive readable on other devices (if FAT32).
Format to Internal Storage: For expanding app storage. Apps can be moved to the USB drive, but the drive becomes locked to the Fire TV and unreadable on other devices.
Warning: Formatting erases all data on the drive. Back up important files before proceeding.
Format the Drive:
Select your preferred option (External or Internal Storage) and confirm. The formatting process takes 2–5 minutes, depending on the drive size.
Do not unplug the USB drive during formatting to avoid corruption.
